چکیده

A complex computational model of the human ability to listen to certain signals in preference of others, also called the cocktail party phenomenon, is built on the basis of surveys into the relevant psychological, DSP, and neural network literature. This model is basically binaural and as such it makes use of both spectral data and spatial data in determining which speaker to listen to. The model uses two neural networks for ltering and speaker identiication. Results from some experimentation with type and architure of these networks is presented along with the results of the model. These results indicate that the model has a distinctive ability to focus on a particular speaker of choice.

The Cocktail Party Problem

This review presents an overview of a challenging problem in auditory perception, the cocktail party phenomenon, the delineation of which goes back to a classic paper by Cherry in 1953. In this review, we address the following issues: (1) human auditory scene analysis, which is a general process carried out by the auditory system of a human listener; (2) insight into auditory perception, which ...

Deep Transform: Cocktail Party Source Separation via Probabilistic Re-Synthesis

In cocktail party listening scenarios, the human brain is able to separate competing speech signals. However, the signal processing implemented by the brain to perform cocktail party listening is not well understood. Here, we trained two separate convolutive autoencoder deep neural networks (DNN) to separate monaural and binaural mixtures of two concurrent speech streams. We then used these DNN...

Benefits of Acoustic Beamforming for Solving the Cocktail Party Problem

The benefit provided to listeners with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) by an acoustic beamforming microphone array was determined in a speech-on-speech masking experiment. Normal-hearing controls were tested as well. For the SNHL listeners, prescription-determined gain was applied to the stimuli, and performance using the beamformer was compared with that obtained using bilateral amplificatio...

From Cocktail Parties to Conference Rooms: Using Human Audition to Improve Collaborative Work KMDI 1001 Assignment One

Spatialized audio is a technology of increasing importance as interaction using audio in multiuser chatspaces and for collaborative work becomes more commonplace. Users are turning to audio as a modality of interaction online, and traditional forms of teleconferencing are evolving into telepresence — interactive environments that make use of as much perceptual information as possible. A review ...

The foreign language cocktail party problem: Energetic and informational masking effects in non-native speech perception.

Studies comparing native and non-native listener performance on speech perception tasks can distinguish the roles of general auditory and language-independent processes from those involving prior knowledge of a given language. Previous experiments have demonstrated a performance disparity between native and non-native listeners on tasks involving sentence processing in noise. However, the effec...
